With Thor hitting the cinemas this week, the wonderful folks at Paramount were nice enough to arrange a conversation with the lovely, up and coming Jaimie Alexander. Jaimie, whom the team at snarkhunters.com has loved since she first came to notice as Jessie on Kyle XY, plays Lady Sif in Marvel's latest offering and is currently in Australia for the world premiere.
This interview contains no spoilers. :)
SnarkHunters: You know we've loved you since Kyle XY - I can't even begin to tell you how great it is to see you on the big screen. Does the entire Thor experience feel big?
Jaimie Alexander: Very big. Thor is the biggest project I've ever done in every way. Big budget, big people, big effects - big everything.
SH: Does the entire experience feel surreal?
JA: Absolutely. I am a huge comic book fan so being part of Thor is an amazing experience.
SH: There's nothing cooler than a girl who reads comics. You seem to have carved a bit of a niche in the sci-fi arena - what with Kyle XY and now Thor
JA: I love sci-fi and I love action - I'm quite happy with that niche. I can't see myself doing romantic comedies.
SH: You are getting quite a following from the geekiverse and comic-cons. Are you going to keep pleasing them?
JA: Oh yeah. I'm going to be very loyal to my fan base.
SH: So does this mean we'll see Sif in a Thor sequel?
JA: Well that will depend on how the first one goes.
SH: As if there's any doubt. How about Avengers? Is Sif coming back in Avengers?
JA: Ha. You'll have to wait and see.
SH: So let's touch on the comics - you've read them? I mean before finding out you were in the film?
JA: Oh yeah, not as much as X-Men, but I had read Avengers and knew who Thor was. It only took a little bit of refreshing my memory.
SH: I know it's hard to create a real world comic environment - but how do you feel about the changes between the comic and the movie?
JA: I think Ken (Branagh) did an amazing job. Every decision had a solid purpose in bringing Thor and Asgard to Earth.
SH: Does that include Thor and Sif not being together?
JA: I think it was a really good decision. There needed to be something to bond Thor to earth and the humanity aspect and Jane Foster's character were vital to that.
SH: Was Sif jealous? I thought I noticed a little jealousy?
JA: Haha, good spot. We tried to make that very subtle but yeah there is a little jealousy. It gives the comic fans and geeks something to think about. A lot of the jealousy is because Sif sees that Thor has changed.
SH: And because she's always had him to herself?
JA: Yeah but we never really had that between Thor and Sif. I mean yeah they are kind of Prince and Princess of Asgard in a lot of ways but for the most part, she is one of the guys.
SH: How did that feel?
JA: I grew up with four brothers so it felt pretty normal.
SH: Four brothers explains the comic books - is that the reason for wrestling in high school?
JA: Actually the wrestling was a dare. Someone told me I couldn't do it and I sorta said we'll see about that. Then I did it and trained and got good at it and really enjoyed it. I am a very active person and love sports.
SH: You seem to have very active roles. Very kick-ass feminist take-no-shit characters. We've got Jessie in Kyle XY, Sif in Thor, also Rest Stop and Hallowed Ground.
JA: Haha yeah that's my thing.
SH: So what about doing your own stunts?
JA: Actually I did a lot of my own stunts and fight sequences on Thor. I have an amazing stunt double, from Adelaide actually who I worked with on Kyle XY. She is great, teaches me a lot. Then there are the stunts they wouldn't let me do. There were a few when they told me what was happening and then said but you're not doing that. I was okay with that.
SH: So you're working with some of the biggest names here: Natalie Portman, Kenneth Branagh, Sir Anthony Hopkins. How was that?
JA: Amazing. I learned so much. Anthony alone is a wealth of knowledge. Every day he was encouraging and great to be around on set.
SH: And Natalie?
JA: She is an amazing and intelligent woman. Absolutely lovely. She has the kind of career I want. She's done a bit of everything. Action, drama …
SH: Sci-Fi
JA: yeah sci-fi
SH: And romantic comedies.
JA: Ahh yeah.
SH: Was the green screen a new experience for you?
JA: Oh yeah, it was my first time.
SH: For our readers who actually thought you were running across the rainbow bridge, can you explain how you coped?
JA: It was great actually. Ken is the reason for that. We all had to run and interact and pretend and react at the same time. Ken was amazing at narrating that and keeping us together.
