Summer is a season fat with nostalgia, a season where various cock-blankets from various media outlets bone on about anthems and sing-a-longs and surprise hits. I shall be no different. I like denim cut-offs, long necks and sticky knees cooled by ceiling fans as much as the next deskbound hack. As such, I proffer the first Quickstix playlist, Socks Off, seven songs that have captured my imagination as we move towards the hotter months.
Quickstix Playlist [1] Socks Off
This is the first single from Bridezilla's forthcoming full length, The First Dance. Promise overflows. Holiday Sidewinder swoons with feathery vocals and lines like "Hold me closer my dear/And wonder/Oh wonder/What's next?". It's sand dunes and long grass, and your new girlfriend holding your hand for the first time. Breathtaking.
Spring clean guitars + cheerful tambourine = earnest indie rock with a bop. Cartoon Cannibal is more slacker charm and tired evening goonbag than it is geeklove twee though, and that's a high-fivin' kinda thing. One of seven songs available from a free-for-download demo. Hook yourself up (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?m4tfmhunoxk) Frenetic, loose and a little ragged around the edges, Summer Lake tickles you with rattling snares and Afro-pop guitar before pummeling you with its chorus: "I keep waking up by mistake/On the bottom of summer lake". Think lowrider bicycles in the suburbs and sneakers with no socks.
One of the sexier cuts (and that's saying something) from The xx's XX, Basic Space combines RnB, indie and electro with arresting results. It'll make you wanna pout 'n strut 'n fuck. Unlikely to remain a surprise, but definitely a hit. Well saucy, though.
Heavy with samples from Lil' Wayne's Lollipop, Ecstasy is come-down anthem cum laude. At some point in the summer months, you will end up on a Lie-low, hungover and sunburnt, floating around someone's pool with this song on repeat.
Gold Canary is a slow-burning, hypnotic, druggy summer sing-a-long. Requisite hand claps and allusions to both Animal Collective and Fleet Foxes abound. Even the most acid-tongued of haters secretly heart both those bands though, so Cloud Control, and this latest effort of theirs, deserve your love.
