Son Lux Cooks Up A Sonic Juxtaposition

Album Review: Son Lux “We Are Rising” 4★
(Anticon) 2011

Mix two parts Laurie Anderson, two parts Radiohead and one part Gotye. Add a healthy dollop of Brian Eno, then fold in dashes of Bjork, Gary Numan and Joanna Newsom. Stir well.

Leave out on the streets of Berlin to soak up the vibes and allow to rest. The resulting mixture will set as Son Lux's "We Are Rising". An aural delicacy.

Sharon Jones’ Soul Revival

Album Review: Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings “I Learned The Hard Way” 4★
(Daptone Records) 2010

When Amy Winehouse exploded across the globe with Back to Black in 2006, the backing band that made her sound so authentic were The Dap-Kings. More than just the house band at Daptone Records, The Dap-Kings and one half of the immensely talented Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings.

I Learned the Hard Way is the 4th album from this retro R&B/Soul combo, and while it lacks a hit single to lead this group into the mainstream, the consistency of the album is of a calibre to take you to another time.
